Commitment Information

  • Type: Individual
  • Target: Domestic and International Challenges
  • Focus Area: Alleviating Poverty
  • Hours Committed: 300 hours/week

Goals

I will develop a non-profit organization dedicated to medical translating that will be operating by 2010. I intend to research areas of medical translation such as certification, licensing, and accreditation and cultivate relationships with language communities and other stakeholders to develop a sustainable organization.

Plan

I plan to use the network I developed while doing research at the Refugee Health Screening Clinic in Austin, and further research in the field of medical translation, including traveling to observe existing programs. Potential partners are Refugee Services of Texas, the aforementioned Refugee Health Screening Clinic, graduate language programs, international student organizations, and the School of Social Work. I hope to inspire people through creating an organization that allows volunteers to experience the best of service learning, using language skills to help others, and working together to connect people to resources.
