MOVIMIENTO SOCIAL-CULTURAL DE LOS TRABAJADORES HAITIANOS (MOSCTHA)
PROJECT BY: American Jewish World Service (AJWS)
ESTIMATED COST: $10,000
ANTICIPATED LAUNCH: October 2008
PROJECT DURATION: 2 months
WEB SITE: www.ajws.org
AJWS has an ongoing relationship with MUDHA in defending the human dignity of Haitian immigrants and their descendants. MUDHA promotes preschool education and parent organizing; human rights and civil society building; and community health education and services. With an AJWS emergency relief grant, MUDHA could provide psychosocial counseling to disaster victims; and coordinate and fundraise for a housing reconstruction project for families. Weekly advocacy and networking opportunities will be carried out with local government, international donor agencies, and other possible allies to ensure that the plight of the Haitian and Haitian-Dominican population is not neglected during relief and reconstruction efforts. Five strategic partnerships will be established.
PARTNERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES:
Additional funds would allow MUDHA to contract a mental health professional who would train the community women to provide more in-depth support to victims particularly those who have been left orphaned or permanently disabled.
PROVIDING PRIMARY SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIPS
PROJECT BY: Yéle Haiti
PARTNERS: Le Fonds de Parrainage National (FPN)
ESTIMATED COST: $1,200,000 per year (funding units: $120 per student per year in urban areas, and $80 outside urban areas, noting that providing scholarships is minimum of a three year commitment and a minimum of 50 in any given school in order to preserve economies of scale)
ANTICIPATED LAUNCH: October 1, 2008
PROJECT DURATION: 11 months
WEB SITE: www.yele.org
Yéle Haiti commits to providing scholarships for primary
school students from poor families in Port-au-Prince, Gonaives, Cap-Haïten, Port-de-Paix, Les Cayes, and Jakmèl. This represents an expansion from the current commitment to sponsor 3,000 children who are supported through a grant from the Voila cell phone company. In Haiti, 95% of all schools in the country are fee-based, even for the poorest of the poor. Education is seen by the vast majority of the population as a way out of poverty, but the cost of education combined with the economic situation in the country has resulted in between 500,000 and one million children and youth being out of school.
PARTNERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES:
In order to bring about this opportunity, Yéle Haiti is requiring the necessary funding to put the project into action.
PROVIDING QUALITY PRIMARY EDUCATION IN STORM-RAVAGED HAITI
PROJECT BY: Save the Children
PARTNERS: Bureau de Nutrition et Développement (BND)
ESTIMATED COST: $4,000,000 – $5,000,000
ANTICIPATED LAUNCH: November 2008
PROJECT DURATION: 3 years
WEB SITE: www.savethechildren.org
Save the Children will use an innovative and comprehensive education program to vastly develop primary education in Haiti. In the first year, we will focus on rehabilitating schools, replacing damaged or lost materials, and re-enrolling children in both public and non-public schools. In the second and third years we will provide technical assistance and resources to schools and teachers. A results-based early literacy program for young children with low reading levels will be provided and revolving textbook libraries will be established. Teachers will be trained in child-centered teaching and cooperative discipline approaches.
PARTNERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES:
To ensure the success and sustainability of the project, Save the Children will involve local government and community members. At the outset, we will partner with the Ministry of Education Engineering Department to conduct a thorough needs assessment of schools in storm-affected areas. Once classes resume, our local partner, BND, will help implement a school nutrition program. We are seeking funding support for this program.
