2 FOR 1: SAFE DRINKING WATER & PLANTING TREES
PROJECT BY: GlobalGiving Foundation
PARTNERS: Lambi Fund of Haiti
ESTIMATED COST: $58,300
ANTICIPATED LAUNCH: Ongoing
PROJECT DURATION: Ongoing

Safe water means healthier children and less illness. It also means that women and children can begin to pursue an education instead of fetching water from a distant source. In addition, more trees mean flood control, improved land for farming due to less soil erosion, and more food. This project therefore has dual benefits: to provide safe drinking water and to plant trees to reforest the surrounding area.
PARTNERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES:
Haiti needs an urgent plan to plant trees and provide safe water
for 600 peasants in the village of Chato. The GlobalGiving Foundation is looking for persons or organizations with the financial means to donate money to implement this crucial means of establishing safe drinking water and rebuilding Chato’s forests.
GREEN COOKING FUELS AND REFORESTATION IN HAITI
PROJECT BY: Fuel from the Fields Project
PARTNERS: Partners in Health, Mayor of Leogane, Les Petits Freres de Sainte Therese de l’Enfant Jesus
ESTIMATED COST: $240,000
ANTICIPATED LAUNCH: January 1, 2009
PROJECT DURATION: 1 year
The Fuel from the Fields project commits to establishing three new training centers to promote the production of charcoal from agricultural waste materials like sugarcane bagasse, corn cobs and husks. By using these carbonized materials as cooking fuel, Haitians can reduce deforestation while creating charcoal micro-enterprises. The charcoal-making training centers will be spread throughout the country: in Leogane near Port au Prince, in Canges in the Central Plateau and in Cape Haitian in the North. Each training center will include an office, a training facility, a nursery for growing trees and cassava and a small market stall.
PARTNERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES:
The Fuel from the Fields project requires partnerships with farmers groups and charcoal-making organizations. In addition, the staff will seek out local metal workers and train them to produce the equipment necessary to produce the charcoal, ensuring local supply chains and enabling additional small businesses to form.
PLANT A TREE IN HAITI AND HELP 155 FAMILIES EAT

PARTNERS: Lambi Fund of Haiti
ESTIMATED COST: $20,196
PROJECT DURATION: Ongoing

For years, villagers cut down Haiti’s trees to get fuel for cooking and to build shelter. As a result, subsequent erosion destroyed the farmlands, leaving little, if no, food. The focus of this program therefore is to plant more trees to provide hope for their future. Successful reforestation will assist in maintaining the villagers’ farmlands and enabling them
PARTNERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES:
The GlobalGiving Foundation is looking for persons or organizations with the financial means to help support this reforestation and progress this project along as quickly as specific experience in this field, would be greatly welcomed so as to rebuild the forest, and consequently the farmland, of Haiti.
REBUILDING A GREEN HAITI: INVESTING IN RELIABLE, EFFICIENT, SOLAR ENERGY
PROJECT BY: Partners In Health (PIH)
PARTNERS: Zanmi Lasante (Partners In Health in Creole), a local
Haitian NGO who is PIH’s sister organization in Haiti; Ministry of Health and Population - Haiti (MSPP)
ESTIMATED COST: $1,950,000
ANTICIPATED LAUNCH: October 1, 2008
PROJECT DURATION: 1 year
WEB SITE: www.pih.org
PIH proposes 13 solar installations at Ministry of Health facilities across central Haiti and the Artibonite valley. These systems will provide a consistent and cost-effective power solution to our clinics, ensuring that we are able to continue providing high-quality medical care to the poorest of the poor in rural Haiti. The estimated cost per system installation is $150,000. We have found that solar power is not only an environmentally sound and cost-effective source of energy, it is also well-suited to many of the isolated rural areas where PIH works that lack other reliable power options.
PARTNERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES:
PIH is looking for partners to help support the capital costs required for these solar installations, as well as partners who can help with equipment or technical expertise.
