IN THE AFTERMATH OF THE STORMS:
REBUILDING HAITI’S SOUTHEAST DEPARTMENT

PROJECT BY: Haiti KONPAY (Konbit Pou Ayiti)
PARTNERS: Rights Action
ESTIMATED COST: $150,000-$200,000
ANTICIPATED LAUNCH: September 2008
PROJECT DURATION: 1 year
WEB SITE: www.konpay.org

Haiti KONPAY commits to build on its current emergency relief work with a multi-dimensional reconstruction program for the Jacmel area. Reconstruction efforts are focused on rebuilding homes, planting new crops, and replacing trees in greenbelts and nurseries, with a complementary education and network-building effort to educate, train, and connect their target population. KONPAY’s youth group, Youth for the Development of Cyvadier (JDS), focuses on educating young people and children and supporting their activities to protect and renew the environment, while encouraging them to educate and raise awareness in their own communities. Through this program, KONPAY will hold community-wide training and educational sessions on ways to improve family-level food security and on how to increase fuel efficiency. The program will also see an awareness-raising campaign launched on the importance of trees for erosion control, and will develop an initiative with regional youth to protect existing greenbelts and plant new greenbelts. An environmental curriculum to be used in schools will also be created.

PARTNERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES:
KONPAY is already on the ground and is connected with the grassroots groups, non-governmental organizations, and government representatives in the southeast region. KONPAY is in an excellent position to translate plans into action and hopes to find partners that are interested in making this plan a reality.
