Yéle Haiti commits to enhancing crop production, improving livelihoods and increasing the availability of locally grown food in vulnerable areas of the country by providing support to 36,000 small farmers in response to the agricultural development strategy of the Government of Haiti and in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture. The project will provide improved open-pollinated (non-hybrid) seeds including corn/maïs (Zea mays), common bean/haricot (Phaseolus vulgaris), pigeon pea/pois congo (Cajanus cajan) and sorghum/sorgho (Sorghum bicolor). As well, there will be a pilot program associated with the project that will deploy cell phones as a way to connect the farmers to their trainers.
PARTNERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES:
By providing the basic tools, materials and appropriate fertilizers, the project aims to improve agricultural practices and increase productivity by the targeted farmers. As such, financial donations are key to implement the different initiatives mentioned above.
CARE FOR HAITI MUSIC PROJECT, AND THE I AM MUSIC CD

Care for Haiti Music project has a goal of using the power of music to raise awareness and support for the people of Haiti, with a focus on women and girls. Through a generous $150,000 donation from the Norbert Simmons Family Foundation, the talent donation of numerous well-known music artists, and the inspiration and leadership of Melky Jean, a beautiful compilation CD titled I Am will launch on International Women’s Day in March 2009. The I Am CD is a world music compilation with motivating lyrics and uplifting melodies that are a tribute to the resilience of Haiti’s poor women and children. In addition to Wyclef and Melky Jean, artists who have volunteered their voices and time include Patti LaBelle, India Arie, T-Pain, Natasha Bedingfield, Sean Paul and other top artists. 100% of proceeds from the sale of the CD will benefit the work of CARE and Yele Foundation in Haiti. In addition to raising money, this effort will heighten the awareness of the plight of women and girls in one of the poorest countries in the world.
PARTNERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES:
One of the critical components to the success of this commitment is strong promotional support for the distribution of the CD. To that end, partner opportunities sought include ssupport in securing a top-tier record label for CD distribution, and marketing partners to extend the promotional reach of the CD, especially to women.
COMMUNICATION CAMPAIGN

Yéle Haiti intends to use this program to commit to using music and media to enlist support in Haiti and abroad for a coordinated program that includes supplying school meals, providing food, creating jobs and supporting local agriculture. This will help build community support for these development projects, an essential tool for sustainability. To this end, Yéle Haiti will engage musicians in the slums in Port-au-Prince, Gonaives and other communities to create new songs, give concerts and generally engage the population to understand and support the activities being undertaken by Yéle and its partners in supplying school meals, providing food, creating jobs and supporting local agriculture. In the U.S. and abroad, Yéle will create a series of PSAs for television, internet and radio that involve Wyclef Jean and a number of his celebrity friends inviting people to go online to a website to make a donations to Haiti relief.

As the program intends to use local musicians, the key factor Yéle Haiti is looking for with this program is financial assistance. By donating appropriate sums, Yéle Haiti will be able to engage the community in the importance of these projects and ensure that it becomes a sustainable effort.
COMMUNITY BASED DISASTER MANAGEMENT AND CAPACITY BUILDING PROGRAM: DOMINICAN REPUBLIC & HAITI

PADF commits to strengthen community disaster management capacities in the Haiti-Dominican Republic border region. This will permit the beneficiary communities to improve their ability to mitigate and manage natural hazards in both their own community and in the respective cross-border communities. PADF will also provide technical assistance to implement a series of community preparedness and mitigation pilot projects. These projects will help the beneficiary communities better prepare for disasters through improved planning and vulnerability reduction activities.
PARTNERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES
PADF is specially situated both to foster cross-border cooperation between the two governments and between their peoples, especially on the border. Its core strengths include established networks in both Haiti and the Dominican Republic, solid technical and administrative expertise, close working relationships with both governments, strong focus on community-based participation and empowerment, private enterprise involvement, and a special affiliation and working relationship with the Organization of American States (OAS).
COMMUNITY-DRIVEN DEVELOPMENT (PRODEP) IN RURAL AND URBAN COMMUNITIES

PADF commits to provide technical assistance, capacity building and institutional strengthening for community groups/organizations, and manage and distribute small grants for the development of local infrastructure projects. These small projects will create jobs, empower local leaders, and increase access to basic services for the beneficiary communities.
PARTNERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES:
PADF initiated the Community-Driven Development methodology in Haiti in 2004, following a successful model developed by the World Bank in Brazil. This opportunity will expand the reach of the project, reaching 400 additional communities, fostering a grassroots participation in development and community activities. It will adapt the rural community-driven development methodology to an urban setting, with the potential to help mitigate conflict/violence and support stabilization in the targeted slum areas by (a) quickly providing improved access to basic services and income generation opportunities to beneficiary community groups or associations; and (b) contributing to strengthen the social cohesion and capital in the targeted communities.
