DELIVERING DISASTER RELIEF AND SUSTAINABLE RECOVERY IN HAITI

PROJECT BY: Partners In Health (PIH)
PARTNERS: Zanmi Lasante (a local Haitian NGO who is PIH’s sister organization in Haiti), Ministry of Public Health, Population of Haiti
ESTIMATED COST: $4,000,000
ANTICIPATED LAUNCH: October 1, 2008
PROJECT DURATION: 2 years
WEB SITE: www.pih.org

Our immediate disaster response includes providing water, food, clothing, shelter and medical care for thousands of displaced people. Our medium and long-term “building back better” efforts include staffing, stocking, and improving the infrastructure of hospitals and health centers overburdened by the disaster. It also concerns expanding education, social support, and food and agriculture programs, as well as repairing or rebuilding homes for displaced families. Our efforts will be concentrated in two regions of Haiti: the lower Artibonite,
40 kilometers from Gonaives, and the Central Plateau, where floods ravaged the cities of Hinche and Mirebalais.

PARTNERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES:
PIH is looking for partners interested in providing the resources necessary to care for hurricane victims in the short-term, and to help rebuild the lives and health infrastructure of Haiti in the medium- to long-term. The process of rebuilding better will strengthen the longstanding partnership between PIH, Zanmi Lasante, and the Haitian Ministry of Public Health and Population. It will also require expanding and establishing partnerships with organizations whose resources and expertise complement Zanmi Lasante’s programs in environmental engineering, construction, watershed management, education, and distribution of food and agricultural inputs.

DELIVERING EMERGENCY AID TO HAITI

PROJECT BY: Project Healthy Children (PHC)
ESTIMATED COST: $92,000
ANTICIPATED LAUNCH: January 1, 2009
PROJECT DURATION: 6 months
WEB SITE: www.projecthealthychildren.org

An important step to achieving medium and long term food security in Haiti is to understand the nutritional needs of the population. PHC will collect data on consumption practices, market dynamics, and trading patterns specific to Haiti using survey instruments, interviews and secondary research to compile a data set. This data will then be analyzed and reviewed by nutritionists, food scientists, and local experts to inform a strategy that sets standards for which food products should be fortified, with what nutrients, and at what levels. Once these standards are agreed, the method and means for monitoring and regulating the local food processors and imports will be developed in collaboration with the government or another non-partisan organization to oversee quality control management. As the standards are rolled out, this will be available to the industry at large to assist in a smooth transition to fortified production. Efforts will also be made to educate the public about the benefits of fortified products.

PARTNERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES:
PHC will provide all technical expertise as well as personnel in Haiti to coordinate the effort. PHC is looking solely for a funding partner.

DELIVERING EMERGENCY AID TO HAITI (1 YEAR)

PROJECT BY: Project Healthy Children (PHC)
PARTNERS: N/A
ESTIMATED COST: $415,000
ANTICIPATED LAUNCH: October 1, 2009
PROJECT DURATION: 1 year
WEB SITE: www.projecthealthychildren.org

Many agencies are poised to address the need for emergency
food aid, including the World Food Programme (WFP), UNICEF, and USAID. Furthermore, there are a number
of organizations with local operations and personnel to distribute these products. While the provision of food is
much needed, much of what is provided is not fortified, and therefore the recipients are not receiving all the nutrients
they need. PHC thus proposes to facilitate the donation of vitamin and mineral supplements to enhance the food that
is being provided through these organizations, and to coordinate with them in order to distribute the supplements
and ensure that the recipients are educated to use the products safely and effectively.

PARTNERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES:
PHC will provide all logistical and technical expertise, as well as personnel in Haiti to coordinate the effort. PHC is looking for a funding partner.

DELIVERING QUALITY HEALTH SERVICES TO 6 COMMUNITIES’ SCHOOLS

PROJECT BY: AME-SADA
PARTNERS: 150 Public Schools within a 10 mile radius of each of the Clinics supported
ESTIMATED COST: $450,000 (total); $75,000 per clinic
ANTICIPATED LAUNCH: November 1, 2008
PROJECT DURATION: 1 year
WEB SITE: www.ame-sada.org

AME-SADA commits to deliver basic health services, such as physicals, vaccinations, treatment of intestinal parasites, health prevention education, and also train two teachers in each of the participating schools to continue training in health prevention education. This project is aiming to benefit 6 different clinics (e.g. Bellanger, Leger, Source Mattelas, Delices, Port Matheux, Richard Allen Hildebrand) and their surrounding schools. A commitment from an individual can be towards one clinic, or to the whole program in general. Each individual clinic will benefit from the same overall investment in basic health services, but will be located in different communities, so as to spread the benefit to as much of the disadvantaged community as possible.

PARTNERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES:
A partnership with willing and able partners is needed to support covering the costs of medical supplies, transportation for the AME-SADA mobile teams to visit the schools, training materials and to cover partial salaries of AME-SADA staff needed to implement this project. Investment and support can be made to one clinic, or to all clinics, at the discretion of the individual.
