AIM HIGH GIRLS! HELP CAMPAIGN TO KEEP ADOLESCENT GIRLS IN SCHOOL
PROJECT BY: Haitian Education & Leadership Program (HELP)
ESTIMATED COST: $1,000,000
ANTICIPATED LAUNCH: Pending funding
WEB SITE: www.haitianeducation.org
HELP proposes a nationwide campaign to encourage adolescent girls to high academic achievement, high school graduation and post-secondary training. HELP will create a nationwide campaign, including advertising, songs from Haiti’s most popular musicians, direct visits, and summer activities encouraging adolescent girls to complete high school and pursue post-secondary training. The campaign will also develop messages for parents and community leaders extolling the virtues of maintaining equal expectations for girls and boys, both in school and at home. Female HELP students and alumni, who have succeeded against the odds, are in a unique position to bring these messages to their peers and their communities. They will serve as models and spokespeople for the campaign, sharing their success stories and encouraging their peers to replicate their success.
PARTNERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES:
The estimated cost for this campaign is $1,000,000, $1 per person reached. In order for the program to transform the prospects of poor young Haitians, HELP is seeking financial support to establish this exciting campaign into a reality.
BASIC LITERACY AND BUSINESS SKILLS EDUCATION PROGRAM
PROJECT BY: American Jewish World Service
PARTNERS: Fonkonze
ESTIMATED COST: $30,000
ANTICIPATED LAUNCH: Continuation of current work
WEB SITE: www.ajws.org
The American Jewish World Service commits to continue working with Fonkonze, Haiti’s alternative bank for the organized poor, to scale up its successful piloted literacy and education program for its financial service clients. The initial pilot program showed that Fonkonze’s clients on the provided educational programs were not merely a temporary supplement to credit activities. The pilot program also proved the sound decision of not hiring outside professional educators to deliver its modules. Instead, credit center leaders were selected to receive increased and more in-depth training and assistance so that they could provide education services to other group members. Additional support to Fonkonze would guarantee educational programs to more clients at branches managed by Fonkonze Financial Services. The American Jewish World Service would continue to support Fonkonze to build the capacity of their financial services to cover the cost of their education work. Continuing at its current rate, Fonkonze will become sufficiently profitable during 2009 to finance out of its own revenues the educational programs for clients at the branches it manages.
PARTNERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES:
We are currently seeking $30,000 for this project. The American Jewish Service welcomes any financial contributions made in order to bring this about and encourage the educational development of even more Haitians.
CATALYZING ENGAGEMENT OF THE HAITIAN BUSINESS COMMUNITY TO SUPPORT EDUCATION IN HAITI
PROJECT BY: American Institutes for Research (AIR)
PARTNERS: USAID
ESTIMATED COST: $1,000,000
ANTICIPATED LAUNCH: Fall 2008
PROJECT DURATION: 3 years
WEB SITE: www.air.org
The AIR is implementing a three-year USAID-funded basic education program designed to increase access to quality basic education in public and non-public schools and for out-of-school youth throughout Haiti. The initiative uses a multi-pronged approach for improving education in Haiti: 1) strengthening the capacity of the Ministry of Education to regulate the system; 2) providing direct services at the school level for improved quality of instruction and learning; and 3) engaging the Haitian business community and the Diaspora to support education improvements. Through support to catalyze expanded and sustained engagement of the Haitian business community and the Diaspora, the initiative will be able to expand the scale and scope of school improvement grants to School Management Committees (SMC) struggling to improve school infrastructure for increased school safety, security and accessibility.
PARTNERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES:
CGI participants have the opportunity to contribute funds through AIR (as a tax deductible contribution) to support this third objective, helping to catalyze expanded and sustained engagement of the Haitian business community and the Diaspora in supporting education improvement initiatives in Haiti. CGI participants are invited to join the Haitian business community and Diaspora to provide resources (approximately $150 per student) to expand the number of scholarships for Haitian students.
