The Hamilton Spectator takes its commitment to the community very seriously. Not content to simply report the news, the paper takes a proactive role around issue awareness. With childhood and adult obesity at an all-time high, we recognize that families need all the help they can get for healthier eating lifestyles. So we devised a series that examined the real-life experiences of three local families. We provided them with a three-month program of nutrition counselling, supermarket safaris and other educational activities designed to help them identify unhealthy habits and develop beneficial ones. Our readers and website users are encouraged to take up their own nutrition makeover challenge using the web-based tools and resources to help the whole family.
Updates
May 12, 2008 - Our three families have gone through an extensive series of consultations with nutritionists. They have participated in stories that document their progress and their struggles. They have appeared in web videos. They have become regional (and well-respected) celebrities for putting thier lives on public display. The print series that chronicles their experiences is on week 10 of 12, so we are about to share the conclusions of this program. But the series continues to draw comments online from others who are inspired by the project.
