In June 2007, I fulfilled a lifelong dream to visit Botswana, Namibia and the great Victoria Falls. While in Livingstone, Zambia, I was told that Malaria frightens local people even more than HIV/Aids. On the anniversary of my departure to Africa, this June 3, I will purchase mosquito nets to celebrate the lives of the wonderful people I met in Africa and the wonderful people who inspire me here at home. In Jan. 2008, I started a new job in our local government to educate the public about protecting our drinking water in our area. This Sat. April 19, I will be attending Earth Day festivites at our local conservation area to educate children about water. Also on April 19, I am staffing a display at a Green Technology Fair where I will talk to local residents about ways they can conserve water and protect our water supply for a lifetime.
Updates
May 4, 2008 - To celebrate my trip to Africa, I've donated $500 (US) to Nothing But Ntets (the United Nations Foundation). This money will provide 50 mosquito nets that will protect families from malaria. To encourage my friends to pay it forward, I've created a powerpoint presentation that discusses the disease and includes my own photos of families I came in contact with in Namibia and Botswana. Hopefully, my friends will take up the challenge.
In addition, to celebrate Mother's Day, I have donated $80.00 (CDN) on behalf of my mother who is a member, to the World Society for the Protection of Animals. This money will ensure better treatment of domesticated elephants in Thailand.
